The tricky part is the integration: the same site can produce ammonia, nitric acid, and finished NPK without moving raw materials very far. Here's a short version of the journey.

Step 1: Ammonia

Yara's nitrogen production starts with natural gas. Methane is reacted with steam to make hydrogen and carbon dioxide; then the hydrogen is combined with nitrogen from the air under high pressure and temperature in the Haber-Bosch process, which was commercialized in 1913. The result is anhydrous ammonia (NH3). This is the backbone of almost every nitrogen fertilizer Yara makes.

I'm not 100% sure of the exact energy mix at every facility, but the process is energy-intensive. That's why natural gas prices show up in fertilizer prices, and why Yara has spent years investing in more efficient ammonia plants.

Step 2: Nitric acid and nitrogen products

Some ammonia is sold directly, but most of it is oxidized to nitric acid. The acid is then neutralized with more ammonia to make ammonium nitrate, or combined with carbon dioxide to make urea. Ammonium nitrate is the main source of nitrogen in many Yara NPKs; urea is more common in warmer regions because it hydrolyzes quickly in moist soil.

An ammonium nitrate-based fertilizer and a urea-based fertilizer may have the same N number on the label, but they behave very differently in the field and in the warehouse. I've watched buyers grab a lower-priced source without reading whether it was prilled or granulated, and the result is usually a mess.

Step 3: Phosphate and potash

Phosphate comes from treated phosphate rock. Yara has its own phosphate mine in Finland, which gives it a supply chain advantage in the European market. Potash is mined elsewhere and usually bought through long-term contracts. These nutrients are combined with the nitrogen base in precise proportions to reach a target NPK grade.

The NPK numbers on a bag are the percentages of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P2O5), and potassium (K2O). A 13-13-13 is not the same as a 15-0-15, even if both are balanced in some marketing sense.

Step 4: Granulation, coating, and quality checks

Once the ingredients are blended, the product is granulated or prilled, dried, cooled, screened, and often coated with an anti-caking agent. That sounds like a minor detail, but granule quality dictates how evenly it spreads, how long the bag stays stable, and whether your applicator clogs. It also affects how the product flows in a storage bin.
